Dec 2009, Balsa USA Cub Flight Log
It’s been along time since I’ve flown this airplane, as I took a hiatus from RC for about 4 years. For the 2009 season however, its been flown quite a few times. It also received a new G62 engine to replace the one that came with it when I bought it new. I was hoping for more power, and while it was more powerful than the last one, I still want some extra power.
It flies very scale like, with some reserve power if needed. The G62 is usually perfect for a cub of this size, but this particular one is probably heavier that most. But even with the extra weight, it flies very light in the air. You’d never know it was heavy at all. Landings are short, gentle, and predictable. Take off is also short as the big wing lifts it right off in about 30′.
My quest for more power if probably due to flying aerobatic airplanes where you always have so much reserve, which is nice for getting out of unusual situations. Even if I had more power, I probably wouldn’t use it. For most scale pilots, I would bet they would feel the G62 is more than enough. And once I fly it more I think I’ll be singing the same tune. I don’t think it would be worth the extra $500 or so to upgrade to a new motor.
Overall, this airplane flies great, looks very realistic in the air and on the ground. Perfect for lazy afternoon touch and go’s, slow flybys, and slips onto the runway. The occasional loops and barrel rolls look great, but put this in a spin from up high and let it do its thing and its majestic.
